designtraveletc asked: A questions that has been on my mind for a while is, what soup do you make/eat when your sick? For omnivores it has always been recommended that you eat chicken soup but I am not sure what is recommended to vegans for when they fall ill. Thanks.

Great question! It seems that recommending chicken soup when sick is more of an old wives’ tale than anything. There ARE healthy things about chicken noodle soup, but it primarily doesn’t have anything to do with the chicken.

Some of the “health” properties of soup include hydration (lots of water), high salt content (which mimics gargling salt water, removing bacteria from your throat) and sinus clearing (any hot liquid, like tea, will do this). There are also vitamins in the carrots, celery, onions and other vegetables that help boost the immune system. Adding garlic adds additional anti-bacterial properties.

Finally, there is the psychological healing aspect that comes from the feeling of “comfort” that you have when you eat hot soup. Often, someone makes it for you, so you feel cared for and that might also help speed up recovery.

That’s sort of a long way of saying, most any hot, salty, vegetable-heavy soup will probably do the trick! Search out a vegetable bean soup and give it a try! There are a lot of great store bought brands as well as recipes online. Even the low-sodium versions have enough salt to help out.

I’ll also post a recipe in the next day or so for a ginger tea I make whenever I’m sick, so keep an eye out for that!
